Can i use my panniers as checked in luggage on an aircraft?

I've completed 3 of a 5 stage round the world trip. My home made aluminium panniers need repair so i thought I'd get them home by using them as 2 pieces of checked in luggage plus it'll save me buying a suitcase for all my stuff. They're not oversize but they do look like really ugly metal boxes.

Should there be any problem getting them onto an aircraft if within the allowable weight.

Any advice appreciated

Declan

Hi Declan

I travel a lot with work and often have our Aircraft engineers travelling with their metal tool boxes which go in the normal luggage in the aircraft. It should be fine as long as they are within the weight limit. If not they will charge you an additional fee for the extra weight.

Happy travels

Steve

I have taken mine without a problem, I strapped them together and had them wrapped in clingfilm at the airport.

I'm not sure I would trust the box latches and whatever hardware protrudes from the cases through the luggage handling process at the airport.

If it were me, I'd just stick them in cardboard boxes and then take them as luggage. I see boxes all the time on the luggage carousels.

Some airline companies prohibit the use of cardbox as luggage.

Jet Blue for example

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
