There's a difference whether you fly in (no visa - get this on arrival) than if you travel overland from Brazil, like you did.
Also, if you ship your bike into Venezuela (air or sea), I heard they require a carnet. At least, they'd like a carnet. Like everywhere else, carnet not required when you cross a land border. (Similar for Ecuador - ship in, maybe yes, maybe no; ride in, no).
Its these differences that make it hard to know what's fact.
