Thumbs up Shipping to and driving in Zanzibar Tanzania.

Getting your own vehicle on Zanzibar Island is well worth it, heaps of backroads and secret paradise beaches to discover. This is how to do it as from today so update and edit the info accordingly, unfortunately I don't have info regarding shipping cars. The roll-on roll-off is in Tanga on scheduled maintenance at present. I didn't put my bike on the boat as I got the honor to drive a classic 1986 Paris-Dakar Gs around the island but a fellow traveler did a day before, I got all this information from him then cross checked it directly with the shipping and customs guys.

The other option is to leave your car/bike in Dar Es Salaam and use the local transportation. A "Dalla-Dalla" costs 2000tsh / $1USD to travel from Stone Town Port to the Nungwi or Paje beachs so extremely cheap, taxis will set you back 30-50usd$. It is also possible to rent a car or motorbike. A 250cc Yamaha costs about 20usd$ per day and a scooter 15usd$ or 35usd$ per day car rental. People have recommended storage at Mikadi Campsite in Dar -6.819559 39.3207 or YMCA/YWCA hostal -6.814137 39.287865 for a small fee.

Driving in Zanzibar
All national driving licences and International license of all countries are accepted in Zanzibar, however they must be presented together with a Zanzibar "Driving Permit" Ok, welcome to Africa. To get a "Driving Permit" you need 15000tsh, two passport photos and a drivers license. Head to the Transportation and license building located behind the Kwerekwe Police and immigration office in Zanzibar Town. Location: -6.178095 39.222819 Take note of the license records in the shelves dating back to the 1960s...

If you can hustle and good at dealing with African cops you could just wing it with an international license. I was recommended to get one by a local.

Shipping

There are two companies, Azam and Flying Horse, Azam is cheaper. If you turn up at 9am you can get on the boat leaving at 12:30, the ferry takes 1:30min.

Azam Marine

Cost one way for a motorbike:
1. 20$ Your personal ticket to Zanzibar. You are a foreigner so you pay in USD. Could cost 35$ also. Depends on humidity and star constellations.
2. 800000tsh/36usd$ for shipping the bike but you can get them down to 60000tsh on the hustle.
3. 400000/18usd$ porter They must manhandle your bike onto the ship. They do a good job, you don't have to worry.
4. 20000/9usd$ government tax, this is unavoidable and you get receipts.

Total shipping one way: 83usd$

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
