New Border Crossing Open? Mauritania-Senegal

Update from Bradt:

According to LewLewal Communications, there's now a vehicle ferry at the Démette/Démèt (Senegal) — Boghé (Mauritania) river crossing, which opens up a third, and thoroughly remote, potential vehicle crossing between Senegal and Mauritania.

The ferry was previously used only for special events, i.e. an annual ziarra (pilgrimage to pay respect to marabouts/saints) for the late Thierno Lamine Djigo, but is now (as of some months ago, in fact) said to be operating a regular service between the two countries.

Nice. I have been down there looking for transport several times but there was no pirogue large enough for a car. Nothing between Rosso and Kayes, no ferry no bridge.

But for us to cross, border posts to do the formalities are needed.

New Bridge at Rosso

So at last, the bridge at Rosso is scheduled to begin:

Pont de Rosso : premier coup de pioche en janvier 2018

Insha'Allah this will help stamp out the huge problems and delays everybody faces at this border.

With Mauritania pushing to rejoin ECOWAS let's hope this is the start of sorting out the situation there in an effort to make cross border trade and travel easier.

We'll have to wait and see.....!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
