Long term 4x4 rental in South Africa?

Posting this on behalf on a friend

Does anyone know of a 4x4 in South Africa for long-term (2 months) rental for a reasonable price? I am heading down from Europe on the moto and a friend wants to meet me for a couple of months half way. He has no motorcycle licence so is looking at a 4x4 option. He is flying out of South Africa so that would be where he gets rid of the vehicle, which I thought could end up being a nightmare if he tried to buy a vehicle in West Africa somewhere. I suggested he aquire a vehicle in SA and drive up through Botswana, Zambia and dare I say it DRC Lumbashi to Kinshasa (alternatively through Angola to DRC). Meet in Kinshasa and then continue together back down through Angola, Namibia, back to SA.

The rental companies I have looked at are quite expensive, so if anyone has any contacts of a rental company or a friend of a friend who has an old 4x4 he wouldn't mind renting out for a couple of months it could be perfect. From what I've read, the paperwork with buying a vehicle can be quite time consuming and a bit of a headache... a borrowed/rented vehicle with an affidavit could work out quite well.

Cheers

I don't think you will find a rental company which will allow a car into DRC, nor will you find someone lending your friend his car to do Lubumbashi-Kinshasa, since this is probably still one of the worst roads to do in Africa. East Africa would be an entire different story. No problem to find companies that rent cars which can be taken up to Kenia. But expect to pay big bucks...

Drive my 4x4 back to South Africa

Hi,
I have a land rover discovery that needs to be returned
to South Africa from Nairobi. The issue is when he wants to start his trip!? We are stuck here in Nairobi until we find someone to drive it down, unless we ship it which is too much money. Please let me know when your friend plans to str this trip! Charlie charliejones23@hotmail.co.uk

I know about a Belgian couple who did drive Lubumbashi - Kinshasa in 2008. It was almost impossible and they can be lucky to be still alive... Besides you can literally throw away the car afterwards looking at the photos they've taken on that route.

So there won't be anyone lending or renting a vehicle for sure.

I'd be glad to sell them my fully equipped expedition Landcruiser stored near Jo-burg. Can help with connections for SA registration even as non resident. Takes about 1 week. :-)

Cheers
