I suppose that boredom is where you find it, and yada yada yada....but still, either route includes a lot of less-than-optimal riding for someone like yourself whose top stated priority is "Fun" motorcycle roads (usually tarmac with lots and lots of twist and turns)." So not quite as bad as I first described, but not what you seemed to be imagining either.

You mentioned working along the way, which is often thought of but seldom accomplished. Unless you've got specific skills which are in high demand, along with the ability to get working papers as a foreign national (or work illegally without suffering the consequences), you're better off earning money at home, where wages are high and opportunities plentiful. So if your skills are in oil, mining, or schmoozing ex-pats and NGO execs, you might manage; otherwise, probably not.

Aside: "SA" is used in reference to both South Africa and South America.

To be fair that was a relatively short section and there were plenty of people to help in the event of an issue. Like everyone else I find it hard to resist posting DRC road-porn!

Hi Dave

Did you do a ride report? I was thinking of trying to avoid Kinshasa by crossing the boarder further west then heading for the Matadi bridge towards Angola. Which route did you take?

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
