Cape Town (South Africa) motorcycle registration - help please!
Hi there,
I arrived in Cape Town and have been here for a few days. I bought myself a Kawasaki KLR650 with the intention of riding it around Africa for 6 months. I am from New Zealand.
I am having trouble getting the bike registered in my name. They ask me for my foreign ID which I don't have (apparently a passport and a driver's license both don't count as foreign ID). Because of this I need to provide proof of my address here in Cape Town and they did not accept a letter from the backpackers I am staying at. Even if I do prove an appropriate address I am told that it will take 4-8 weeks to process. Is there a way around this?
Can anybody please help me with this? I am desperate to hit the road but now it seems like a distant dream..
Thanks,
Joe

I'm running into the same issue. The traffic dept won't accept my invoice for accommodation as appropriate documentation. And then they said it would take 1-3 weeks at least. I'm based in Cape Town for the next few weeks but would like to purchase a bike here and ship it back with me when I leave in Aug. Anyone with suggestions mind sending me a PM?
Thanks!
