Red face Cape Town to Berlin. Wanna meet up?

Hey guys and gals,
Hope you're having a great day.

I'm just about to head off on an overland mission on my Yamaha XT660R named Darkwing.

I leave Cape Town next Tuesday (14/6/16) and will traverse across South Africa before visiting these countries in roughly this order:

Mozambique
Zimbabwe
Zambia
Malawi
Tanzania
Rwanda
Uganda
Kenya
Ethiopia
Sudan
Egypt

Then I'll jump on the ferry over to Turkey and start making my way to and through Europe. I'm extremely excited and have spent the last month getting all my ducks in a row: visas, immunisations, bike, panniers, gear, etc etc.

It's my first long-distance overland journey and so if anyone out there is interested in joining me for a leg of the trip I'd certainly be up for some company. Especially once I get north of Malawi and borders start to get a bit questionable.

And if anyone has done this trip before and has any tips/advice for me, I'd be so grateful to hear what you have to say.

I'll be filming my journey and sharing on YouTube under the monicker Freezer Bird, because I'm free as a bird. Feel free to follow me here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZg...FRMjQxISvycwpA

I would love to hear from anyone out there, so drop me a message and let's chat.

Rich

Haha

Hey Rich,

How funny to find you here!
I am in Nairobi at the moment and will probably rent a bike for 2-3 weeks to drive to Uganda. After that I will continue my trip by public transport up to Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt (...)
Where are you at the moment my Freezer Bird ?

Hi Rich

I live in C.T. and only just saw this. Have been planning my own trip (solo) to Europe. Shall be following your trip closely.

Are you sure about the ferry from Egypt to Turkey? I have heard and know of guys that eventually turned back as they could not get across to Europe.
Ride safe and enjoy

Overland Tonka:- that is exactly what I thought.

Rich Jay:- How do you plan to get off Africa? From what I understand you plan on leaving from Egypt on a ferry to Turkey.

Hello Rich Jay,

Don't fall into despair about this ferry issue.
If you can't sail you sure can fly.
One thing I found useful was Turkish Airlines. You can fly your bike from Khartoum to Turkey and collect it there and ride on.

Rich/Andy

I am riding from Cape Town north on an XT660z. I am currently in Tanzania, planning to cross to Rwanda next Sunday and into Uganda the following Wednesday.

May not meet your timings but if it does (or i can help with feedback) get in touch.

My blog is at www.temporaryescapee.wordpress.com - best to message me via that or send me a pm since i am not on the Hubb often whilst i am travelling.

Cheers
Andy

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
