We crossed the border on the Kiffa-Kayes route last year and really enjoyed the trip. It's a bit sandy, and the tracks can be a bit confusing near villages but there are plenty of people to ask for directions if necessary. Also no problem to find a quiet place to camp.
In Kayes we reported to the police to get stamped in. The police also arranged for an insurance agent (Noor Assur company) to come in - after some negotiation it was CFA26000 for a month, which was much less than we had been quoted in Nouakchott. We did not bother getting a lassiz passez from Customs, and had no problems at checkpoints until several weeks later in Timbuktu, where they insisted we buy one.
