I was there 18 months ago - its very low risk, and we didn't even get bitten. I looked at the various warnings at the time, and I had my daughter with me - so I can't remember the specifics, but I wouldn't have taken any meaningful risk with her there. We also spent time in the marshes around Aguape, which I assume would be higher risk - no problems at all. And malaria medication is a real pain....

No anti malarial medication is needed in South America unless you are REALLY going off the beaten track.

I've strong view about the high cost, side effects and efficacy of such medication and would not consider it unless going somewhere where malaria is rife and without it you would be sure to catch it.

A preferable alternative (IMO) is to carry a course of quinine sulphate which is very cheap and can be used to treat suspected cases of malaria.

Mossie repellent should see you right in South America. Happy travels.

Matt

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
