What do Latin-American overlanders do for insurance?

Hi all,

Going to live in Chile - I've got private medical insurance as part of my job but it does not cover vehicles. I want to tour afterwards, i.e. Argentina, Bolivar, etc. Buying travel insurance for 2 years just seems rather a lot of money, so I'm wondering what do Chileans, for instance, do? Can I just buy full insurance for the bike when I'm in Chile?

Cheers,

RTW

cheap insurance in salta

hey there!

we are two extranjeros who got the information that there is an insurance-guy in salta:

we went there and got in no time our quite cheap insurance. It cost us about 66 pesos per month. And its valid for these countries: Uruguay, Paraguay, Brasil, Bolivia, Chile, Peru and Argentina.

Can you buy fully comp vehicle insurance which covers personal injury which would pay private medical fees for foreigners?

you can buy third party insurance for the whole of MERCOSUR countries (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Venezuela, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru...). I got mine in BAs but some friends got theirs in La Paz....

The insurance is cheap but don't expect anything from it. I recommend to buy it just in case. When someone crashed into me and destroyed my bike, I was on my own (the insurance never answered my calls or emails!), but I was asked for those docs by the police.

If you cause damages to 3rd party they may cover some bit of it. but I wouldn't hold my breath.
IF you want Europe type insurance you would pay through the nose and not sure you can.

For medical insurance in case of accident to you while riding, get a good travel insurance covering MC as allowed activity.

Cheers,

3rd party insurance in Bolivia

Is it required? Neither at the border nor the police control between the border an La Paz asked for it. I asked a SOAT lady in La Paz who said it is mandatory, but of course she lives from it...?! In that case I would be very interested in one that covers all the countries named above! Who in La Paz sells this one?
Thanks!

Yes it is required to have 3rd party insurance. I was asked for it a couple of times During a full year travelling, so you can do without.

If you are asked and not showing you can get a good fine/ trouble.
You can buy it. It is valid for Mercosur countries. We bought it and many other riders.
It is not worth the paper it is written on but can Smooth things out in case of trouble.
My bike was stolen in Brazil and someone crashed into me in chile ( big crash lots of damage!) and I was asked every time for it, although I was the victim! It can come handy!
But then we did travel few months without.
Personal choice in the end.
Cheers,

I had it in many countries, always specifically for the one country I was in, but in these cases they told me at the border that it was required. Not in Bolivia, though. If I encounter a place where I can sign one for the countries to come, I will. Thanks for the info!
How did you solve the 2 situations?
