Tyre availability in Patagonia
I will be heading to patagonia from Santiago and possibly all the way to ushuaia.

I may need to get a new tyre as the tread will be low approx half way down. Are motorbike tyres available for purchase in any of the towns down there?

I bought a Heidenau from Motoaventura in Osorno when I rode the Caraterra Austral.

They have a nice shop and friendly staff that let me do a few things to the bike in there shop.

What bike are you riding? Some sizes are more common than others.
My advice would be to pack a spare rear tire on the back. Front tires last at least twice as long as a rear, so, if you begin the trip with a NEW front and rear tire, and pack a spare rear, you are good for quite a good distance ... but of course this depends on:
1. The bike??
2 On Road or Off Road ??
3. Riding style (hard or easy? fast or slow?)??

MotoAdventure is a BMW$$$ RENTAL PLACE$$$. Friends rented from them, expensive but good bikes. Not sure on tires or what they stock. Probably just tires for their rental fleet.

Ushuaia has a couple moto shops now (none recommended), doubt they stock much in the way of tires??

Not sure about Punta Arenas, but probably a shop there without tires. Any tire you buy down there is going to cost you BIG. Best to buy tires in Santiago. Don't forget about spare tubes and good patching/repair kits ... that you actually know how to use.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the responses.

I have a pair of pirelli MT 21s on the front and rear wheels. I am riding a sumo torque, no laughs please haha, and would say i am a midrange driver in terms of agression. Not too hard but not too soft.

I have travelled 6500Km on each tyre as they were both installed as new at the same time in peru. Looking at the current tred wear, the rear tire looks ok however the front one looks more worn than the back. I dont think it will make it to ushuaia never mind back up the east coast of argentina.

How many Kms should i be getting out of these tyres roughly? I have a 21 on the front and an 18 on the back.

I should also mention the wear on the tread on the front tyre is rather uneven. the two side-by-side knobbies in the center are wearing faster that the single ones. Infact the side by side knobbies are down to the bone whereas the singles havent worn too bad. In terms of driving conditions i have made my way down from Peru and into Chile and argentina and i am currently in Santiago. So i would say i have been maybe 80% on road and 20 off. Is this due to riding maily on tarmac?

i have read that 6k KMs is good wear for this kind of tyre but when i bought it i was told i should easily get 10k out of them.

Ill also be tackling the Careterra Austral. So i think ill get the front changed in Santiago and possiblñy carry a spare for the back perhaps. A friend metioned possibly swapping to the dunlop 606s.

If anyone could provide advice on my other questions itwould be appreciated.
