Is it ok to carry a shock absorber onto an aircraft?
Good morning!

Has anyone recently travelled on an aircraft with a shock absorber? Just wondering because they contain compressed fluids.

If so, I imagine it's best to check it in with luggage which goes into the aircraft hold, not carry-on.

Any info would be great. Thank you!

Errr .. compressed gas. Fluids don't compress.

No, not allowed into cabin.... only for gas operated artificial limbs ...

Not even allowed for checked hold luggage! Even those tire inflation thingys .. not allowed.

Strictly you need to decompress for the flight. Re-compress once there. You may need to demonstrate that it has no compressed gas.. and you may need written approval from the airline to have it in your hold baggage! Best to ask the airline, in writing so you get a written reply that you can take with you.

Depends on the shock. Many xo-called gas pressurised units only have a couple of psi in them to help stop foaming. I've imported shocks from US to Australia and they went by normal post and email. You won't get them through in carry-on luggage because they would make a good weapon.

In early December last year a friend carried a shock for me in his hold luggage from Miami/ USA to La Paz/ Bolivia without a problem. I know of another friend of a friend who did the same from Germany to Rio de Janeiro/Brazil in early January this year. Don't have information on which airline they flew.

I took this shock (below) in my checked-in holdall bag, from London Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur (via Hong Kong) in February 2013. Carrier was Cathay Pacific.



Incidentally, on the same flight I also checked-in a new rear tyre - again, a hold luggage item - without any real problems:



Therefore, based on my personal experience I say .. 'go for it!'

A tyre you could just hang around your neck and tell them it is a new type of neck rest to help you sleep comfotably.
