New tires between Salta and S. Pedro d. Atacama

Dear adventurers,

We are heading north from San Juan (north of Mendoza) towards Salta, Argentina to S. Pedro d. A.

We will have to replace our back tires (110/90 - 16) in S.Pedro at the latest. The garages in Argentina keep telling us we should get the tires in Chile as they will be way cheaper. We have serious doubts we will find suitable tires in S. Pedro.

Does anybody know if we can get tires there?
Otherwise we will try to arrange them on the way...

Cheers
Wauschi

We didn't look for tyres in San Pedro, but given that there was not much choice in most other common goods, I wouldn't count on getting good prices on special tyres, or even getting the tyres you want at any price.

Iquiqui free trade be a possibility, but we found that buying batteries and tyres in both Buenos Aries and Iquiqui, using Dollar Blue rates actually made the Argentinian prices cheaper than in the Chile free trade zone. Provided you have US$ or Euro that is.

Calama (1.30h from SPDA) could have then, there is a Yamaha dealership that sells tires and stuff. What bike are you on? San Pedro is just a tourist pueblo don't count on finding much there. I've learnt trying to save money just results in you spending more or just having more problems later on.

I would also try Calama and if you can't get your tire there the only other way is to buy them online in Santiago and have them shipped with Turbus Cargo or Pulman to San Pedro or Calama. This is cheap and fast, you just have to find a dealer in Santiago who sends stuff with Turbus. Pay for your tire online, pay Turbus when you pick it up.

saludos,

Groschi

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
