A few months ago I have been denied entry because I didn't hand-out my permit when I exited Colombia !! Claude, I did not mean to insinuate that you are getting ripped off or anything. Furthermore, you are right, if you got caught cruising about on an expired permit, things could get real ugly real fast. Potentially, losing the bike could be the outcome. I would hardly call CO a third world country, but as all things go in capitalist economies, prices are based less upon costs of providing goods/services, but more upon "what the market will bear." I'd imagine that bikes have found long term storage in CO for prices ranging from free to much higher than you are paying.

My question about storage units was to just get more info. It might be a good option for some. Put the bike in a storage unit fairly near a border, retrieve the bike and then leave the country.

I asked la chachi how much she would charge for a long stay, like 6 months, she said it could be 70.000 COP per month.

This is mine there in the locker, will be there for about 2 months.

and btw there is now a second bike in the same space, a UK-plated XT

There are also about a dozen cars in the lot right in front. That's her business.

P.S.: Don't underestimate the problems being caught riding without a temp import permit in any country. Just received an email from a guy coming towards panama and his bike has been impounded in CR because he entered through mosquito and didn't have the permit. got caught almost exiting. Now he said he had to return, by bus, to San Jose trying to resolve the issue and get the bike back. No news so far...

Hey guys

I left a bike with Cachi and Ive been trying to get in contact with her but the number I had and also the number that is posted on this site seems to be offline. Does anyone have a current number for her or has been there recently and seen what bikes are currently with her?If so could you get in contact with me.

Long term storage
Anyone in need to store a bike for long terms(3 to 12 months or even more), there's good way to do it in Iguazu(Brazilian side), we're use to store bikes for long terms. I've kept my tenere for more than a year here till I decide what to do.
If you're able to come around, please contact me and I would be pleased to give the right instructions for that.

Hi Rod,

You write that you can store a bike from 3 to 12 months, by looking at your address you're based in Brasil, my understanding was that you couldn't have a bike longer than 90 days in Brasil. Can you explain how one can store a bike legaly for 12 months in there?

Legal 1 year storage in SA
Hi,

A year ago I stored my bike in Ecuador for 9 Months, but had to cross illegally into Peru. This was done but fudging a fake exit stamp and signature and not stopping at the exit (Ecuador) customs.

A better option is to store a bike in Uruguay with the standard 12 month permit if entering at a land crossing, as opposed to air, sea, ferry. I can give you the info for a shop where it is $50/month (Willies Motos, Montevideo). They have stored my bike and other part time travellers many times.
