Leaving the bike in South America for 6 months
Hi,
I am currently travelling through South America and playing with the thought to leave the bike here for 6 months and continue my trip end of 2011.

Does somebody know which countries (preferably Colombia, Peru, Bolivia or Chile) allow a longterm stay of motorcycles with only an acceptable amount of paperwork?

We left our bikes in Colombia for 7 months this past year. It wasn't exactly legal but we didn't worry about it too much. It is easy to leave Colombia (at least towards the south) because you don't have to show your paperwork to exit the country and the office that would care is out of site of the border and where you can get your passport stamped.

Maybe this isn't the best advice, but it is what we did. We tried really hard to do it legally in Cali, but couldn't.
Beyond that, I don't have much advice.

Thanks for your hint, Marshall! ... I guess it still may work since I already left Colombia once a month ago and the border crossing was indeed pretty relaxed, but I also share your tension decribed in your blog regarding the checkpoints ...

I was given a 6 month entrance permit for my motorcycle in Bolivia (and 3 month for myself).

If you can make it a bit further South, Argentina allows 8 month and Uruguay 12 month

... Uruguay - Easy to get a 12 month permit

... Argentina - With a little haggle you can get an 8 month permit

my bike is currently in uruguay with 12 mth permit and before that got 8 mth permit in argentina was hoping to leave bike in peru bolivia or equador next but need to be able to get 6 mth permit without returning to extend a 3mth permit is this possable in any of these countrys and find someone to store my bike any help much appreciated frank

I had my motorcycle permit extended twice in Asuncion. Paraguay. It cost me 100 dollars bribe for each 3 month extension (you are supposed to be in the country to extend, which explains the bribe).

I got the motorcycle parked at Wiebe und Schmiedt Posada, close to the Remanso bridge leading to Clorinda, Argentina (20 km)

I'm in the process of trying to extend my permiso for Colombia from the States right now and it appears to be neither easy nor straightforward. I'm sure it's more difficult since I'm in the States (injury on the road forced return for a bit) but DIAN doesn't seem to have a process in place to do that, at least that the clerks answering email know about. If I ever get it figured out I'll post the info.

I am almost full time in Colombia and a long time I have been in SEU...

Storage in Santiago,Chile
SamericaXplorer is offering besides logistics and shipment to the HUBB/ADV riders all along S.A and USA, also, storage in Santiago de Chile for a fair rate of $75 monthly (2011).

The storage is a 24 hours used space for office and business , very safe and controlled, managed by my rep in Santiago.
