yes of course it is compulsory , even if policemen don't ask you or don't know

the best is to buy in Argentina insurance ATM which is valid for all MercoSur countries and it is cheap!!

Big place, South America. Lots of countries, each with their own rules--written and unwritten. Specific questions about specific countries might yield useful answers.

I bought insurance in French Guiana, Guyana, Colombia once in two visits, Venezuela. Not elsewhere AFAIR. Definitely not in Argentina or Chile. Everyone does what they believe necessary and/or wise.

Hope that's helpful.

er no not hugely

Ok so to be more specific. Im currently in Chile where I believe I have to purchase 3rd party insurance JUST for Chile which is attached to the bike not rider.

As any third party this does not cover theft. I would like ti purchase a more robust insurance covering theft for such countries including Chile Arg Peru Bolivia Equador Colombia.

Ive heard of Fallabella this arvo at the bike shop. The young fella there said they do theft cover for Chile but wasnt sure about other countries.

I don't have a lot to offer, since I seldom bought insurance, but I can do a Google search. Try search terms ATM insurance Mercosur....or use the same terms using the search function on this site.

I must be getting grumpy and due for a nap. Hope that's helpful nonetheless.

Hola,

The SOAT national insurance is mandatory in Colombia. They will often ask you to buy it at the border. It is attached to the vehicle and not to the driver.
I think it covers all traffic accidents (pilot and 3rd party for sure). Allows you to go to the hospital without paying anything.
For Ecuador it seems like it's not mandatory...

Some countries have a great system where people involved in vehicle accidents causing injury or damage to others are locked up until it is all sorted out BUT the possession of valid liability insurance is an immediate get-out-of-jail-card.

Good system.

As others have said, just because you don't get asked to show your papers, doesn't mean it isn't mandatory (or prudent) to have adequate insurance.

sorry but in this forum they don't advice you if there is a new message

by the way , yes you can, but only if you are in Argentina, or some friend is going for you

this is the way , in Chile insurances are much much much... more expensive

if you are crossing Argentinean border if policeman knows sometimes he is asking you the insurance because it is compulsory
