Exclamation Help: Need info on buying car in Chile/Selling car in Colombia

Hi all,

We are a group of musicians buying a car here in Santiago. We've hit a couple of roadblocks and need some help...

First, today we attempted to get an RUT to buy the car in Chile. No one at the office really seemed to know what they were doing, but ultimately concluded that we needed a notary to confirm that we have money to buy a car and a Chilean representative (just because.) I was wondering if this is necessary or if we should go to another office and try again...

Second, we would like to sell the car in Colombia. I haven't found any straight forward information on this, perhaps it doesn't exist. We know that selling it to a local, legally would be absolutely out of the question. I read in some places that it is possible to sell it to another foreigner who is planning on leaving the country but anything else beyond that is vague. What would the paperwork/process look like for selling the Chilean plated car to another traveler?

Thanks!
Sincerely,
A noob.

Been posts here and on other forums about taking weeks rather than days to finalise a vehicle purchase in Chile.

As for selling it, most countries let you import a vehicle by issuing a Temporary Vehicle Import Permit, and one of the "rules" is you take it out of the country before the TVIP expires.
I've heard of another rule imposed by Chile that you can't take one of their vehicles out of Chile for more than a certain time or there are complications when you return. Might be incorrect though.

Selling a car to another foreigner is usually technically illegal, but of course there are ways around that, but which involve some risks for both seller and buyer. If you were to return the vehicle to Chile there would be no problem, but in Columbia, it might be another matter.

I sure hope it doesn't take more than weeks here... It's weird because it seemed like, according to most sources, it would be relatively easy to get an RUT and buy the car but maybe things have changed recently.

Thanks for the info!
