CHILE
Recent posts mentioned a non-Chilean getting turned back when trying to leave with a Chilean-plate bike.
PERU
I heard from a guy in the motorcycle biz that the Peruvians block non-nationals from exiting to Bolivia with Peruvian bikes to slow stolen bikes from crossing the border...who knows...maybe Peru just doesn't want tourists draining the national supply of bikes. It doesn't really matter. Peru has started enforcing the law.
ARGENTINA
I have read many times that non-national riders are blocked when attempting to leave AR with a second-hand AR-plate bike.
It's getting harder every year for foreign riders to buy a nicely broken-in bike and rip around South America. =(

peru chile
I think from seeing the trends with the back packer community with sketchy papers and bikes.
Peruvian/ Bolivian officials have noticed that a person on a small bike is bound to break the rules and they have enforced the need to weed these traveller's out.
There has been a trend of these low life people with small bikes to just do what they think is on there agenda ,
I think it is pissing off a lot of officials in the the department of transportation and External Affairs. Young people that want adventures on the cheap on motorcycles are F**king it up and making it harder for legit people on fully compliance motorcycles to have freedom at border crossings with no hassle.
There are well documented videos on you tube like ED Mar*h that has probably pissed off a lot of officials although it is entertaining
There are tons of posts on this site that have questions in disregard of the laws.
South America.
is not as ass backward ass you think.
I follow the laws because I am a Expat living in Colombia with a Colombian registered Moto and have the freedom to travel anywhere in SA without a Hassle and I do it a lot

My main aim is to cover Argentina, Chile, Peru and maybe Bolivia.
Exiting Peru is a problem.
From my checks, renting a motor-bike in Chile (or Argentina) is quite expensive (like USD200 per day) - so that is why I considered the Peru buy/sell back option.
Can someone please advise what might be a good option for me?

We rode Argentine registered motorcycles from Peru into Bolivia several years ago , no problem. But, Argentina prohibits tourists who have legally purchased an Argentine registered motorcycle from exiting the motorcycle from Argentina.
Elisa was just interviewed by Jim Martin on Adventure Rider Radio and explains how when we were tourists we exited our Argentine registered motorcycles from Argentina and into Chile. https://adventureriderradio.com

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
