Crossing from peru into Bolivia - can it be done?
 

I have heard that Bolivia is refusing entry to peru registered bikes - me. I have been told that n going from Chile to Bolivia on the same bike is no problem. Someone else told me that you can get a special entry permit before you get to the border then you can enter. And yet a friend said that someone he knows went to the border and asked about the permit and they had no idea what he was talking about and then denied entry. I am about to head that way - most likely tomorrow and would sure like the truth on this one. I am a Canadian currently in arequipa, peru

I don't know exactly the way in your case, but I strongly recommend you pay attention to one document named: "Declaración Jurada de Ingreso y Salida de Vehículo de Uso Privado para Turismo".

I heard that this is the mainly vehicle document in order to avoid problems with the authorities.

Maybe Toby from Around the Block Motos might know. As far as I know it shouldn't be a problem if the bike has been legally transfered into your name.

Actually it was toby who gave me the info on being turned down at the border. I have all the paperwork to show I t is in my name so I will try tomorrow. I am currently in juliaca, peru.

You CAN NOT cross from Peru into Bolivia with a peru plated vehicle. I tried today and I was allowed to cross but not the motorcycle. I own it, my paper work was all in order. There are no exceptions. I had been closed off on my visit to peru and had to be readmitted to the country but since the guy was gone for lunch I walked to Bolivia and asked. They will allow any Peruvian vehicle to cross but none come their way. It is entirely political on the part of peru as I can cross to Chile and then enter bolivia. In fact bolivia customs never entered the picture, it was all handled by Peru immigration. While there I watched as people unloaded goods from peru vehicles, manually moved them across the border and put them on Bolivian vehicles.

The lesson learned, I should have dug a little deeper, the rumours were indeed fact. It burns 4 days leaving the coast and attempting this crossing.

Many years ago, 1992... I had the same problem and had to turn back to Lima and buy a Carnet de Passage at the Touring & Automovil Club del Peru! I had to leave a deposit of 4000 US, this was to certify that my peruvian car would be brought back to Peru. Not sure if you still can\have to get a CdP nowadays in order to leave the country?

It's a shame that things are getting increasingly complicated in South America. It's looking like I'm simply going to have to abandon my motorcycle to the Colombian Aduana because there is little else to be done with it.

I crossed to Bolivia with my Peru registered bike about 3 weeks ago..early March if I remember correctly. It can be done but tedious task. You need to prepare 2 documents in Puno before making your way to border. You can only cross at Desaguardo border not Copacabana.

At the border, you need to get Aduanas Agents to prepare you the 3rd documents using the 2 documents you prepared in Puno. You need the whole day for this process and pay a lot of money. 150 dollar a lot! But it get you thru.. And yes, I have to agree this trouble is on Peru side. Bolivia admit me in no question ask..none of the documents I prepared earlier required. Just my registration to prove the bike is in my name.

Made it all the way to Chile and Argentina.. I know this information is much too late but I hope it will help future bikers.
