Buying a motorbike from another Traveller
Hey everybody,
i want to traveller through south america by motorbike and i will probably start in chile. I want to buy a motorbike from another traveller. But how does the process look like? How do i get the bike into my name? And is it easier to buy from another traveller than to buy an chilean bike an do all the paperwork. I heard it can be very tricky nowadays to geht the RUT.

Hi DrZoidberg and welcome,
You will have to give us a few more details, in which country is the bike registered is probably the most important but both yours and the sellers nationalities can affect the answer.

Poder - permission to ride - South America
DrZoidberg,
I just addressed the issue of "poders" (owner's permission for another to ride a bike in South America) on the following thread, see post #5 on Trip Paperwork.
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...-2-bikes-89164
I addressed only 3 potential issues, and my analysis is in no way complete. Please consult the many other threads that deal with selling/buying foreign registered bikes in South America.

Important Update
DrZoidberg, after considerable more research I have added information regarding th need for "Apostiles" with a "Poders" (permissions for non owners to ride a motorcycle in South America), if traveling internationally.
Please revisit this link for edited information about "Apostiles."

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
