Careterra Austral - Chile...

One of the Most Scenic Routes in the World is Careterra Austral in Chile!!!
It captures the hearts of intrepid riders with its pristine landscapes and possibly the freshest air in the world. Runs 1.240 mostly unpaved kilometers
alongside ancient forests, glaciers, pioneer farmsteads, turquoise rivers and the crashing Pacific.

fantastic ride

If condidions allow and my body can be repaired.
I will do the complete Careterra Austral.

From Puerto Montt to Villa O'Higgins.
I had planned it to start it October 2020, but you know what happened ...

I want to go all the way down, T o the most remote areas. Even there is no crossing to Argentine. And you have to return the same way.
And enter Argentina via Chile Chico

Ahh, memories..... together with a friend I cycled from Punta Arenas to El Chaitén, hiked to the basecamps of Cerro Torre and Fitz Roy. Unforgettable! Then we took a bus to Chile Chico and cycled past Puerto Montt to Osorno. Only then we took to the train and our journey ended in Santiago.
But that was in 1994. Hardly any traffic ;o)

No tarmac, strong winds, dust, punctures... My God, what a pleasure to do that trip on a m/c

@Jefe thanks for sharing!

Yes, this leg was very very beautiful to O`Higgins, did was there at 2015!

Unfortunately I did too miss a important part:

https://vanlife.4x4tripping.com/2021...argentina.html

It is one of those adventures, who is not possible the whole year, probably not possible by bike anyway. I didnt know that this adventure was waiting there... But that is the reason why I did write a blog - to collect this informations.

That is one of the best sections and not to be missed. Even though I crossed at Chile Chico I talked to people who did it and saw a video on Facebook

It's a beautiful and scenic route, but most of the time you ride in the dust of vehicles in front of you. Especially in the nicer parts of this route.

It is very famous for bicycle tours there too - and hell - that dosnt look like fun for that.

With a bike you are more flexible, with overtaking or use more distance...

It's not even fun on a motorcycle, when you find yourself in an endless queue of vehicles and a cloud of dust, where it's hard to see the vehicle in front of you. We had more fun taking some side routes and finally being able to see the beautiful scenery. We were there in february though. Maybe it's better in other months of the year.

You are absolutely right but there are also many gorgeous crossings into Argentina.

I suggest Puerta Monte to O’Higgins and then back up to Puerta Yungay, take the ferry down to Puerta Natales, which is a nice trip.
Then, since you’re in the neighbourhood, nip down to Ushiaia and head north via Calafate, El Chalten etc, which are all wonderful.
Next, head north on the famous Ruta 40 and look for crossings back into Chile.
There are quite a few before you get up to Santiago; Chile Chico, Fatelaufu, one left from Bariloche, the Ruta 60/199 towards Pucon Lake. All of these are incredibly fine roads with friendly, quick borders.

Chilean and Argentinian Patagonia are as different as chalk and cheese. I found those passes to be amongst the most enjoyable roads I’ve ever seen.

I hope Zthe world opens up again and you get to ride those roads.

I rode down there in October and November on a moto with my wife on the back.

The ferries were largely empty. Often just two or three bikes and three or four camper vans. Most of the hotels were empty or half empty. The roads were EMPTY! The weather was superb.
So if other vehicles and their dust is looking like a problem, try earlier in the season.

We're going back there as soon as possible. Bikes are still in Buenos Aires and waiting for us.

Queues or "empty roads"

depends on season

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
