Buying a motorcycle from private party in Bolivia

Anyone purchased a motorcycle from a private party in Bolivia, Im from the U.S but have family and friends in Bolivia, I heard it can be a pain in the @ to purchase a motorcycle from a private party in Bolivia as a U.S citizen, pondering on getting a older (2005 and up) name brand motorcycle in good condition , rather then the Chinese motorcycles you can buy new at a dealer so its most likely i will purchase from a private party seller.

I have heard the process is much easier if i can get a friend/family member in Bolivia to purchase the motorcycle and then they can help me put the paper work in my name, I do have a U.S motorcycle license will that be valid or do i need to get a Bolivian DL, anyone ever got stopped by the police in Bolivia what paper work do they ask for any other tips/suggestions are welcomed.

you will get stopped a lot of times at several check points.

they ask for passport, driver license, bike/car documents and the TIP. They love to do stamps on it.
Also they love to ask for many. please deny this always!

For the rest i can not help you. i haven't done it in Bolivia, but it doesn't matter in which country you will buy your bike always be sure there are no fines on the bike, everything is okay with documents and the seller is the owner.

Yes, it can be pain ... and also very time and money consuming if you dont dont know the right tramitador ... but it can be done (even if you are US citizen)

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
