ATM withdrawals in Argentina

Does anyone have any knowledge of the maximums per withdrawal and the daily limits for ATM use in Argentina by tourists? (I believe they are different than for locals)

I don't remember the exact amounts but I remember it was a pain. The per withdrawal amount was very low and they charged a huge fee. I never hit a daily limit , I could withdraw the max each time with a huge fee for each transaction. In Patagonia my chip card wouldn't work at all but I had heard that in advance so I took enough cash with me from a machine in Mendoza.

Its 2000 pesos per withdrawal. Like stated above, the fees are high. It's unfortunate because in Chile you can take out 200000 pesos at one time. (much more after conversions)

As far as I am concerned, it depends on the card issuer/ country/ bank as well as the local banks in Argentina.

In Mexico, we tried 5 banks to end up in HSBC for the lowest commission which was 35 pesos for our VISA (with BBVA to charge 85!).

In El Salvador, we had to try 6 banks before ending up to a local small bank called Bank Hipotecario that was charging zero fees.

Travelling for a month, you dont save a lot but travelling for 5 years, you certainly save some pennies= money ;-)

I think it depends on many things as mentioned above. Card issuer, the bank and the ATM itself. Most places in Argentina I tried I could get 2400 pesos but not 2500. And knowing the fee is 90 something pesos - the limit is probably 2500 including the fee in most cases. But would of course be nice if one could get more.

In Chile Banco Estado is one of the better. The fee is 4000 baht while most other bank charges 5000 pesos - and you can also withdraw more than the usual 200 000 pesos in one go. I have got 300 000 in one go but I read that you could get even more.

Xoom.com - direct to our Argentine bank account or one of many pick up locations throughout Buenos Aires and the country of Argentina.

Check it out. Xoom.com. You must have a US bank account / US Debit/Credit card.

Used to give much better exchange rate dollar to peso AR than ATMs with much lower fees than ATMs. Very High limits - Exchange rate today is 1 USD = 15 pesos AR. looks like fees went up a little. check it out...

Argentina is a bit of a special case that is a carryover from the dolarblue era and then the major change to the system when the exchange rate was allowed to float. Fees are high and limits are low to try and keep the lid on things.

Little point in comparing withdrawal limits between different countries with vastlyt different conversion rates. Chile is 500 pesos to the dollar so 200,000 limit is still a paltry 400 dollars although much better than Argentinas.

I'm back in SA and heading for Argentina and have a heap of USA dollars specifically to try and avoid the silly limits and high charges that apply in Argentina (that I also understand to cause problems with credit card transactions

Receiving funds depends on the time of day you request the funds via internet..., and what time zone etc...- for many years it was always the next day when funds were available in Buenos Aires.

One caution - understand you will be picking up AR pesos - it will not be dollars, or the official currency of whatever country you are in.... If you will be using a pick up location, go to that location before you ask for the transfer. Find out that the location is open and what the hours are. Ask there how long the transfer will take.

Once trying to pick up AR pesos in Rosario, Argentina, the pick up location was closed down. So, verify your pick up location. One of the tellers at each pick up location will speak English.

Other than the location being closed in Rosario, we never had a problem. Some pick up locations are open on the weekends, others not... and some are located the same place as Western Union.

I think the upper limit is equivalent of $10,000 dollars US but that might have changed - check Xoom.com web site.

Not yet. We are still in Colombia but thanks a lot for letting us know. I can stock up USD in Ecuador ;-)
