Just as an update that the following places mentioned by RalEva in 2006 still existed when we visited in the beginning of 2010:
- Ideal Travellers House in Kota Bharu. We paid MR 35 for a double with attached bathroom and a balcony. The place is clean, the management friendly, and there is WiFi (worked well in the room!) at a small additional price.
- Cameronian Inn in Tanah Rata. We paid MR 40 for a tiny double room with a shared bathroom.
Also the Pujangga Homestay in Kuala Lumpur mentioned in another thread is still there. We paid MR 70 for an air-conditioned double with a shared bathroom, but there is WiFi.

Room prices vary a lot - a double with attached bathroom was MR 80, with shared bathroom MR 60. The staff are super friendly and if you're lucky you'll be able to catch WiFi in your room. Parking in the video-surveillanced back yard.
