Take old bike!
I just sold my 2003 R1150GS Adventure so that I could ride my old R100GS around the world next year. You mention the exact reasons why I made the decision I did. I'm in the process of going through the bike this winter to prepare it for the journey where the Adventure would have been simply jumping on and hitting the starter button!
You might find that Lonely Planet books are a good resource for weather information. They'll say when the wet season is and all the other good stuff such as festivals not to miss. For weather I sometimes pop onto www.wunderground.com to see what the weather is currently in a certain location. For example, on this day next year we should be somewhere near Lima, Peru where it is currently 22C and partly cloudy while in Calgary it is -2C and overcast.
