You didnt mention where in Thailand you want to ride? But I highly suggest the north as the north is by far the best place to ride a motorcycle in Thailand.

Starting from Chiang Mai is a good place as there are many rental businesses there. Chiang Rai is also an alternative but there arent that much rentals to choose from.

C&P rentals is the most professional rental agency in Chiang Mai: https://www.facebook.com/share/16ZNX...ibextid=wwXIfr

POP rentals have the best selection of bikes.

Routes - in the north you can pretty much ride any road, especially the 3 and 4 digits. The Mae Hong Son loop is mandatory, the Phayao-Nan-Bo Kleua-Pua is fantastic too…. The roads at the far west and far east in Chiang Rai province that hugs the borders to Myanmar and Laos is gorgous too….

There are also some great roads and riding to be had in Issan although I would not know where to get bike hire in that area as I have never needed to hire.
Have a look at my local and not so local ride reports which may give you some inspiration
Whatever you decide enjoy it, it’s great riding here

Hi Rick, I did a trip from Bangkok to the southern border, up to the northern border, and back to Bangkok a few months ago. I rented a crf300L through BSR bike shop In Bkk. I’d definitely recommend checking them out. The 300 was more than enough for me given the speed limits and flow of traffic and they include basic insurance. If you go south be sure to check out the 410 route down to Betong. Good luck and if you have any questions I’d be happy to help. Safe travels.

As Snakeboy says, Chiang Mai is a great place to start a trip. Plenty of hire shops and there is a bit of bikers scene there.
Not sure if it's still there but there was a bar on the top right (north west) corner of the moat road called Bikers Corner. Most of the hire shops are south of there along the moat road or in the small Soi's off to the side.

As for where to go....head for the mountains, The Mai Hong Song Loop is a popular ride out from C.M. There's good riding everywhere.
Make sure you have an international driving permet and wear a helmet in the cities (lots of tourists don't and get caught/fined by the Police roadblocks, especially in C.M.

Yep - the shop at the northeast inner corner of the moat in Chiang Mai is called Riders Corner. They have both a guesthouse, a restaurant/bar/cafe and a motorbike rental service. They have just aquired some nice new bikes for rent such as Honda Transalps, Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 and Royal Enfield Hunter350s.

They have a bunch of Crfs and smaller scooters as well. And they know theyre way around in the north so one can get very good route advise from them too…

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
