Ship Car from Japan to Russia

Hi ,

Just wondering if anyone has shipped their car from Japan to Russia, i'm looking at shipping my car from australia to Japan and then onot Russia as a way of saving money rather than going direct to Vladvistok from Australia. Cant find any info on the net regarding this or any blogs or anything of people who have done this before.

I will already have a carnet de passage as i plan on getting to europe via Iran. Also wondering how hard is the temporary import approval to Japan?

Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

Hi,

My experience dates from 2004 when I travelled through Russia to Vladivostok and crossed over to Japan. At that time there was a regular weekly ferry from Vladivostok to Fushiki near Toyama in Japan. Russians came to Japan to buy second hand cars and they transported their cars with that ferry to Russia. I suppose that ferry is still running.

For Japan you don't only need a carnet de passage but that carnet has to authenticated by the Japanese Automobile Federation (JAF). Maybe that has changed, I don't know. I suggest you look at the website of JAF (in English too).

Have a good trip,

Mathew

Apart from regular services to Validvostock (regularly used for importing used and new vehicles), there also is, or was, a ferry service between Japan and Korsakov on Sakhalin Island (Russia) and another on the west of Sakhalin to Vanino on 'mainland' Russia.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
