Kazakstan to India, is it possible?
Hi
I was planning a trip from Lisbon to mongolia and had no idea how to come back...but after watching Guarav Jani's movie "on the top of the world" a brigth idea come to my mind!.
After riding the migthy steepes of mongolia, i could get back to Kazakstan and then ride south to India....crossing the Karakoram and the head to Dehli and finally GOA. From there i could ship my bike in mumbai.

This was me day dreaming...now let's put my feet on the ground and check if it's doable or not!

Contacting Mr Guarav Jani was good for my hopes.....he told me that there is a chance of doing it overland if you're not INDIAN. I'm a non-indian, thereby i'm not excluded for now!! But on the other hand, as he is Indian, he never did that journey.

Can i get any help from anyone?

There is a route through but last time I checked you needed a guide for the short section through China, you will need to go from Kazakhstan through Kyrgyzstan and Tadjikistan into the Torugart pass, you can then go through Kashgar into northern Pakistan and on into India.

I'm checking caravancafe website, and found also this good reference about Tougart pass: Kyrgyzstan - The Torugart Pass

One bad thing about this path is the need for carnet.......but it would INCREASE a lot the interess of the journey.....

If the hassels and cost of getting into China are too much, you can go through the other "stans": Kaz, Kyrgz, Uz, Turkmenistan, Iran, Pakistan, India.

As of July 2007, the borders between Mongolia and Kazakhstan are not open to foreigners to cross through. So you would have to pass through Tashanta into Russia in order to get into Kazakh, and subsequently Kyrgyzstan.

OOops, yeah that's right. I forgot to mention that. So when you get your Russian visa, it needs to be a business visa so you can get back in.

Mongolia to India
I'll be doing a similar trip in '08, Europe to Mongolia through the "Stans" and
would like to ride South across Western China into Tibet and then on to
Nepal. I understand the issues involved in crossing China, but it seems some
riders have managed to ride in Western China without a guide.
Is it possible to ride into Tibet and South to Nepal. What visa and permit
problems will one encounter?

From what I remember from being there the border from Mongolia to Kzk is about 20 miles long and doesn't have any roads anyway!! The shortest route is to go up to Barnaul (Russia) then drop into Semey (patalinsk), this was true last year as well. If Western Mongolia is too much the roads up to Irkustk then West are pretty good (in summer). Wouldn't recommend cross-country in Siberia, very wet ground indeed if it's not frozen

Thanks for your replies. I'd like to cross Iran, but i'll have to wait and see what will be the future on that area...and the price of the carnet still doesn't help.
