Hi everyone,
At the next year I wont will go to Iran and Turkey, but my motorcycle yamaha vstar. What is the quality of the road in these country?

In 2012 the roads were generally in a better state in most of Iran compared with eastern turkey, but the roads were fairly good also in turkey. I encountered several long stretches of gravel on main highways where road works were taking place.

Iran has excellent roads all over. You won't need to leave asphalt.

As much as I'd love to visit Iran on my planned ride the authorities are not as helpful as they used to be (wonder why) and now insist on a guide, plus it's the only country on my route where I would need a carnet. It's still tempting, but the balance I believe has tipped against the detour.

AFAIK the guide etc requirement is just for UK/Canada/US citizens.

I rode from London to Iran in October 2016 and was free to roam around Iran which I did for 3 weeks. I am Irish citizen.

Americans, British and Canadians are forced to hire a guide when visiting Iran. This does not apply to other nationalities. So as a Russian you don't need a guide. All you need is a Carnet de Passage for the motorbike.

Roads in Turkey are generally very good and those that aren't are being upgraded at a very quick rate. Iran also has very good roads. Only some very nasty speed bumps on some of the larger roads.

It's best to have a carnet, but not strictly necessary. A temporary import document can be made at the border.

I'm not recommending you do this, but people should be aware that 'you need a carnet for Iran' is internet dogma which is incorrect.

Hi Im looking to tour Iran if possible in my New Zealand Registered Toyota land cruiser. I also have NZ passport.
I don't have a Carnet so keen to understand how this temporary import document works ??? Is it a hassle to obtain? as Im keen to travel there as I have heard good things about Iran

I have not done it myself, but know personally someone who has, and have read quite a few accounts of others doing it, and at various borders.

It does seem to be quite a hassle, the customs guys may not be too keen to do it, but with perseverance people get it. I have heard $250 to $600 in fees - obviously there are unofficial fees involved.

As said, I would really try to get a carnet, but if you cannot, then it does not stop you from visiting Iran.
