Has anyone done this? Darwin over to Singapore through to Malaysia and onwards?
Hi all, new to this site. I have found a wealth of information, but there's so much I don't know where to look! Anyway, I'm looking at a route to take as I'll be starting off in Sydney and I'll travel right around Australia. From Darwin we wanted to hop over to Singapore, then to Malaysia and then on to Thailand and up through Asia. Has anyone done this? I would love to hear your stories! Thanks everyone!

Yes, many travellers have done something similar recently. Browse Route Planning and Southern Asia-sections, and you shall find.

If I had some time, I´d try to go from Darwin to Dili, East Timor, not Singapore, and then head west through Indonesia, because it´s in a word fantastic. And it may not be fully hassle-free, but then entering Singapore with a vehicle is not either.

What do you mean by "up through Asia", BTW? Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos should be relatively easily do-able with your own vehicle.... but to compensate to this, Burma, China or Vietnam are either impossible, or very, very expensive.

Yep. Check out Nathan Millward, he rode Dot, his 110cc postie bike, from Sydney to London. Google is your friend. Just finished his brilliant book 'Long Ride Home', (aka as 'Going Postal'). It's just been released in the UK on Kindle for £3



You can read his ride report over at ADVrider, which contains some great vids from his Facebook. He also has some intereting videos on his YouTube nathanthepostman.

I'm not on a commission or anything, LOL... but I've heard his presentation at Ripley and just read his book. He deserves some promotion, as little as it is...

Yep, loads of overlanders here have done this .. BUT, why are you by-passing Indonesia? I recommend that you don't; most - who have been through Indo - would agree with me, I'm sure. Don't miss it!

wow thanks for the info. Yeah I was thinking of going through Thailand, Cambodia and so on, I'd be interested in China, but only the very remote parts. I'm not interested in the cities.

Do it!
Perkins Shipping in Darwin will get your bike to either East Timor (you ride up through Indo) or straight to Singapore. You CANNOT travel with the bike, so will need to book your own flights. If you do ship to Singapore, you'll need to hire a truck to get your bike out of the port as it is forbidden to ride or push it (Perkins can arrange it). We hired the truck all the way to the Malaysian border to save all the bullshit paperwork to ride in Singapore itself. We did this as part of a Oz to UK ride this time last year.
