Pyrenees for a week

Hi, a bit of a long one.
A bit of background.
A mate and I are planning on taking in the joys of the Pyrenees in 2018 as part of our 50th birthday celebrations. We were originally going to do a grand circle starting off from Bilbao, along the Pyrenees then up across the south of France, wandering through the Alps and then up to the 'Ring' for a lap or two then back down to Le Harve and home.
That was the plan, my mate on his BMW R1200 R and me on my XT1200Z carrying his stripped down wheelchair(he lost a leg) a long time ago)
Best laid plans and all that we are now at the stage where he has been knocked off again battering himself further so doubts if he could do so many miles and I have just been diagnosed with degenerative disc disease so are chopping in the XT for a 650 Burgman.
Now we are looking at going straight from Bilbao to the middle of the Pyrenees and staying there while day tripping out. This way we can have a rest day if needed. The wives have also invited themselves so we gain a support vehicle for the chair and another bike.

Now to the point. Where would you base yourselves for such a trip? The French or Spanish side? As the wives are along and with my back a hotel is a must hopefully with a decent bar slightly up hill of it.
Any help would be appreciated. I know it seems very early for planning the trip but it gives us something to work towards.

Thanks

This is a lovely small town. Handy for what you want and excellent access to the roads. And it has pubs!

Luchon looks ideal (I speak better French than I do Spanish!). My mate and his wife are going along to Thruxton this weekend with us to watch the British Super Bikes sobthis gives us something to chat about

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
