Buy/sell motorcycle Central America

Hi all,

We would like to travel from California/Mexico to Panama or vice versa on two locally bought motorcycles. We have four months, starting september and finishing december.

Can anyone share their experience in (legally) buying in one country and selling in another?

Thanks in advance!

Greetings, Christian & Annabel

Sell in same country

If you buy in one country and sell it in another.
=> Then the bike has to be imported to that other country.
A procedure and cost that you should avoid.
Let see if anyone can say that they have done it.

It is better to plan a round trip.
Buy and sell in Mexico is a realistic solution.

I do not know about current rules.
But some years ago, that was no problem.
I know about one person that got an address of the dealer.
With that address, he could register himself and buy a bike in his own name.
And drive all the way to Ushuaia and back.

Keep us updated

Hi Erik,

Thanks for your your reply.

I did Colombia - Ushuaia on a Canadian motorcycle a couple of years ago, on a poder. But would prefer to legally own the bike this time, as I heard that bordercrossings in Central America can be difficult.. (though, anyone with experience in poder-travel in Central America, pls share!)

Luckily I know some spanish by now...

It was not a problem in Mexico.
But they have introduces a requirement that you need a
CURP.

Clave Única de Registro de Población

Maybe you need to be a resident to get that ??
Before, an address was enough.

Let us know what you find out.
=
The CURP is required when you apply for a Mexican driver’s license, apply for employment, file taxes, apply for an RFC Registro Federal de Contribuyentes (a tax identification number), register a vehicle in Mexico, start a business, or open a bank account. You will also require a CURP for Civil Registry, and any other government services including free healthcare and a senior discount program called INAPAM

For further information about the CURP or for help acquiring it, contact Adriana at info@immigrationtomexico.mx

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
