I chose the Italy - ferry - Greece route purely due to the constraints on time. If you are not limited, then the overland route one way or return would be an option you could explore.
I was informed, by an Italian on board the ferry, the cost for a crossing is less if booked abroad, particularly if you require accommodation. This may or may not be true. Travelling from Ancona to Igoumenitsa, once without and then with on board accommodation I found the latter far more pleasant, albeit relatively expensive.
