Algarve day trip Monchique - Silves - Faro

Todays day trip was a shopping trip to the grocery store in Silves about 30 km away from Monchique. Silves is an ancient and very picturesque town at the foothills of the Serra Monchique, a mountain range with plenty twisties, and a large castle overlooking the river.

Silves is blessed with a large Lidl grocery store so I took the oportunity to cruise around some in the vicinity, taking my groceries for a ride.

After leaving Silves I made my way through the countryside to the beach town of Albufeira and then along the Algarve southern coast eastward towards Faro, the Algarve regions capital, my final destination and turn around point.

Taking the roads close to the coast is not as much fun as in the back country roads as the Algarve coast is developed with and for tourism and thus has a bit of traffic, roundabouts and traffic lights.

I passed Villanova, a upscale golf town including large marina with large boats and Ouarteira where you can drive along the beach for a little ways right in the middle of downtown.

My next stop was the beach of the city of Faro located behing the Faro airport passing over a little bridge. Cute little place but all restaurants and cafes are still closed due to the Corona lockdown. The beaches were open though.

Finally I arrived in Faro cruising around the downtown area but not getting off the bike to walk around the innermost old city parts within the ancient walls or the pedestrian shopping area downtown. All very pretty though.

On my way back to the Monchique area I passed by Silves one more time to look at the awesome castle and cute bridge spanning the river.

Just before Monchique propper I visited the thermal springs of Monchique, well, from the outside, as they are closed due to the lockdown. Super nice shaded little valley location. Bummer all is closed.

Awesome little daytrip with about 250km driven in about 5 hours leisure time and speed.

I am in this little village with wifi in the streets. Please bear with me that I have them on my instagram account. It takes to much time to upload them here. I give it a try when I have better internet in the future

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
