If I remember correct, the Buraat pass is now paved ( or shortly before being paved ). I remember it lost a lot of its nice overview .
It definitely has a new track and not the old one I did in 2013


From what I heard from Caravan travellers, They did a lot of offroad from Ulaanbaatar to Altai on the southern road, but I do not know which stretches.

A lot of construction still between Khovd an Tolbo in 2018

Free worldwide Garmin maps from OpenStreetMap

Personally i think it is always ok if you want something and you are new to find a few nice words of Introduction instead of coming in and just ask for a favour.

But maybe I am old fashioned.

Dear Klausmong1, very sorry but I wasn`t aware of any introduction side but on the other hand I agree with you and would take the chance by now together with a big thank you for your link,

I am an 45 years old (young) German, living in Switzerland and ride bikes since child and now looking to extend my horizon in terms of visiting none-European countries on bike.

Very sorry again for any inconvenience raised and wish you a wonderful day.

if you have a Garmin unit, than follow Klaus link (it is often overloaded, so try again later if it doesn't work).


If you're more of a smartphone user, maps.me does a decent job, and it's free (although with ads nowadays), but there is also Galileo, OsmAnd, PocketNavigator, etc.


Don't ever use Google Maps in Mongolia, it's hopelessly wrong.

If you'd like to get informations from other travelling bikers it is mandatory to first introduce yourself in the right section of the HUBB:

Otherwise you might get barked at again by some user, who will check first if there was made the mandatory introduction, but can't find it because now you made your introduction in a thread about mongolian maps.

Well, I did not bark at him.

It is just getting a normal thing that a lot of new users come into a forum, and just ask for help and often don't even say thank you.

This is why I mentioned that, because I think it is an act of friendliness to just say a few words about yourself too, just as in real life if you meet someone and want to ask something.

And if you look correct, you will also see that I did post a link with useful information.

Where was your useful information about the topic?

or did you just want to point at someone with no help to the one who asked ?

This is the HUBB, a forum where travellers share their knowledge with other travellers.
Trips from a few weeks to several years, nobody cares, there is no hierarchy.
Most travel by motorbike, some by 4wd and a few even by bicycle.

This forum is huge:
Threads: 80,601, Posts: 537,726, Users: 67,617
Currently Active Users: 3730 (315 Users and/or Members and 3415 guests)

Who cares if a new member hasn't introduced himself in the welcome section.
If a question is unclear, there will be few/no answers, so what.

If you feel a question is not worthy your time...
Don't answer!

But please don't bark at them.
Sharing is the purpose of this forum.

it was not about the welcome section, If I see that someone asks in his 1st post something without just telling a little bit about him I consider this a little unfriendly.

This is something what bothers me in the internet, everybody wants information but does not want to say a proper hollo.

And yes, you are right, sharing is the purpose here.
And this is for both sides.

I was sharing information and asking for some "Hello" in the first post.

And to be honest, it was you starting to bark around and make a big deal out of it

And you are also right, I will not answer in the future and help people if I think it is not worth it.
And this is because of your stupid answer here.

Still for the protocol:
I did give information for the one who asked, I just wanted him to show some respect too.

And then you came up with making a big deal out of it.

In the future in similar situations, I will keep my feet still and dont answer anymore.

This forum is to big to work with introductions. Maybe it was his first post without introduction, or maybe he did write an introduction and I did not read it. Because there are 67,617 members on this forum of which 3828 are active right now. I don't know any of this people, and will never read their introduction. Yet, if they ask something that I know, I will answer their question. Just like you.

I surely hope that nobody will introduce himself in topics that are not started by that person or not about that person. Because that would just be off-topic and make a mess.

The second thing is that I do not feel like you should treat somebody differently because his postcount is only 1.

We have this gathering of travellers each year on a campsite, just very small and informal, but there are usually a few new faces everytime. If I come walking into a conversation at the bbq or whatever, and I don't know everybody yet, I will just try to add any information that I can to help people on the road.

I believe you would do that too Klaus.
