Hi

I've been in Russia with my car more then ten times, but for my next trip I wish to leave a car there (September 2016), returning early the following year (April 2017).

On entering the country I get 90 days to keep the car in; I know it is possible to extend this, but what have people done? I don't really want to get in trouble with the Russian authorities as I'm a regular visitor, and I'm not keen on losing the vehicle either.

Is it easy to do?

Thanks a lot for these. One year would be fine, I plan on entering September 2016 with a one-year business visa, flying out in October with the car in Magadan, then flying back February and leaving Russia finally in April 2017. Tentative plan.

OK. You will need to extend your temporary import before you leave in October. When you extend it, you will need to bring several documents, including:
--passport
--visa
--Russian migration card
--personal registration
--vehicle registration
--vehicle insurance

The one thing you should check is for how long you'll be able to register yourself with your visa; the temp import can't be extended longer than your registration or visa. With my visa I can register for six months at a time, but yours could be different.

It's important to get the paperwork right, it sounds like nothing but problems if your bike overstays its temporary import, although I can't say that I know anyone that it has actually happened to.

As you get closer ping us here, there are several of us with a fair bit of experience with temporary imports.

I plan to obtain a 12 month Multi Entry Business Visa.

It really depends. I I also personally have had one year business visa without any problems.


But world situation has changed as has political climate in Russia in last years. There has been few cases in newspapers in Finland where tourists has been questioned because of their "wrong" visa type by authorities and there has been also some other cases where border officials has taken more strict approach. One explanation has been that officials have started to target/take down some companies writing invitation letters to visas.

To tell one other example of recent changes. There has been in one border crossing in border area a petrol station and shop where people have stopped for petrol and shopping. Mainly finnish people. That has been sole purpose and business for this russian petrol station/shop. Now Russian border guard has started to fine people and taking them into interview for border vialations after stopping (which has been normal business for years). Official reason is that stopping in border zones is illegal and naturally by the law that is correct but for years it was not reason to sue people so....

So most likely it is possible no problems will come but there is still possibility. In Russia everything is possible
