Hi everyone.
Does anyone know if it is possible to go through here? We are a group of 6 bikes on the way to Ulaanbaatar.

Yes, this border has been opened to all passport holders since approximately 2011/12.

I've not been in the area since 2015 but security is fine on both sides.

Klausmong, and what about crossing Chechenia? We are thinking 2 options... Grozni or Volgogrado?

in 2015 I did not cross Tschetschenia, I crossed to Elista and Astrkhan ( by the way, Elista is a beautiful Mongolian-Buddhstic enclafe )

But if I would go there again, I would definitely use Tschetschenia.
Some friends of me did it and they said its nice and fantastic.
And as I know them I would trust on that

Thanks a lot, we have seen this road in Maps but we have no info about it.

Tschetschenia is our first goal, but in August there was an attack by Isis and in previous months too, it's an important decision... although very attractive

We crossed in 2016 and chose the Chechnya route (Grozny) towards Astrakhan. No problems at all. Lots of friendly meetings. Many militarily checkpoints, but we were never stopped.

After Astrakhan we did make the detour to Elista between Astrakhan and Volgograd, because we decided it was worth a visit in its own right.

Our choice is probably Grozny, although Elista is a very interesting option that we didn't know.
Volgograd is undoubtedly a very attractive city but it extends the trip one more day and we don't have more time

Well, we are already processing visas for Russia (with 2 tickets) and Mongolia, as well as Turkey (online).
Does anyone know if Georgia, Chechnya and Kazakhstan require you to pay insurance at the entrance?

Chechnya is very scenic, but you need to get off the main road. Grozny is mildly interesting for having transformed from a warzone to one of Russia's smartest cities. Ingushetia is also nice. If you are in that corner of Russia, Dagestan is the real highlight with fantastic mountain valleys. Even with little time, I highly recommend a quick visit to Derbent on the coast. As Klaus said, Elista is also an interesting place, though you won't see the Caspian Sea on that route.

Russia (Chechnya is not an independent country) and Kazakhstan require you to have insurance, and it is available at most borders.

Georgia I am not sure, but I never bought it there.

Georgia you need insurance now and can get it at the border or ask around.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
