crossing russia in the arctic circle is it possible?
Does anybody know if it's possible to go from Finland to Yakutsk staying in the arctic circle, or at least as much north as possible? I would like to drive on the most norther route possible, avoiding all the big cities in Russia, only going trough villages and **** up cities.

It seems that there is a road higher north than Perm, at least google maps show it. In theory you can go as far as Strezhevoy, which is north from Novosibisrk, so approx in the middle of Russia. But then, I can't see anything between this and Mirny.

Does somebody have some information about that? Is there anything up there?

Another question that I ask myself. Is it rideable from Yakustk to Tiksi by motorbike? Some russian bikers in Yakutsk told me they were there in the winter with the car. The distance is quite bike, and there is no fuel stop in beetween.

There are some possibilities north of the Arctic circle, but especially in Siberia only in winter on zimniks. A good collection, what is possible in Far East and North, you can find in this hubb post (Overland to Kamchatka):

Best overview for zimniks in Russia:
ZIMNIK - Ice Roads in Russia - Gentleman Adventurer

Most described zimniks are in south-north direction. But there are also some in west-east direction, for example Salechard - Novy-Urengoy - Norilsk. Behind Norilsk a zimnik could be exist too, but maybe not every winter. I found one report which describes a ride from Norilsk along river Hatanga to Olenok, Udachny and finally Mirny in Yakutia:

From Mirny there is an all season road to Yakutsk. North of the Arctic circle, from Olenok to Tiksi maybe also a zimnik exist. A snow mobile expedition from Salehard to Chukotka reported, that they followed some zimniks, but I'm not sure if this means also the connection to Tiksi:

Generally it is not easy to ride on zimniks, especially in tundra. If there is some wind, the ice road can disappear very fast, so no zimnik is sure to drive...

Thanks for all the links Bikevagabond! I will check these in detail.

I know that the route from Mirny to Yakustk is ok during the summer as well, some guys did it this summer, seems quite good. But for the rest, I didn't find information so far.

And for the winter driving, I guess it's not possible for me, you need to be born in finland to start something as crasy! ;-)

ah ok.. the question about Yakutsk-Tiksi seems to me that you would also like to bike in winter. To Verchoyansk and Tiksi there is no summer road, but in winter a zimnik.

About summer road connections in West Siberia I don't know so much, most difficult sections are often at the destrict-borders. But if you follow the big rivers like Ob, then it's possible to use ships/ferries to the next road. I guess that it's also necessary on Lena river to Lensk. I know that there is a summer road from Bratsk to Ust-Kut and Kirensk, but further??

In 2007 I was cycling the route Ust-Kut - Severobaykalsk - Taksimo - Bodaybo, from there with ships and ferries back to Lena river and up to Lensk. I got no information about a connection between Kirensk and Lensk.. But maybe such a road was built in last years. The route from Lensk to Mirny and further via Vilyuysk to Yakutsk was a well used summer road.
