Bike Rental in the Pamirs?

I consider visiting the Pamir Region for 7-10 days at the end of July and to travel along Pamir Hwy and Wakhan Valley.

I'm based in Kunduz, Afghanistan and the shortest way to get there appears to be to enter Tajikistan in Khorog or Ishkashim from Faizabad. One appealing option would be to travel along Wakhan, then up to Murgab and back to Khorog via Pamir Hwy and cross back into AFG.

I've been dreaming of doing this on a well-maintained, capable motorbike. However, I won't have time to go all the way to Osh to rent one.

Therefore, is it conceivable to rent any kind of halfway reasonably maintained motorbike in Khorog, Ishkashim or Murgab?

Even if there are not suitable bikes for traveling between these towns, are there any for rent that could be used for day trips at least?

It appears there are rather unusual means of transport available (yaks, camels) so there should be some kinds of bikes, too, no?

I read that there are no decent rental options in Dushanbe. I'd be keen to know should that have changed.

you are not even going to see a halfway decently maintained motorcycle in Khorog or Murghab.

Its Osh or bust I am afraid.

Thanks, Colebatch and muztoo, for your helpful responses.

I've written to you separately, muztoo.

At this point it looks as if this trip is going to be too short to justify shipping bikes to Murgab. But I consider this trip also as preparation for a more extended one for which I would definitely consider renting bikes from you.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
