I've ridden bikes in a few parts of the world, but, for the most, I was happy with the 4-wheeled option through Central Asia (I do mostly ride road bikes, so for adventure bikers, this doesn't apply) - apart from some of Kyrgyzstan, the roads don't really lend themselves to enjoyable riding (undulating, potholed, long straights, etc), but you can make your own decision on that.

In case you are thinking along a similar line, and are planning a trip around Central Asia this summer, the buy/sell option is definitely worth considering, particularly if you're going through Tajikistan - getting across the Pamirs is a must but is expensive if you hire a driver & 4WD, eg to the tune of 1,500USD or more depending on arrangement (alternatively you could hitch-hike, but we were one of a handful of cars on the road each day, and all others were full - you can get stuck in places (or you could pushbike, but that thought was horrible at 4,000m)).
