Exclamation Help / Advise needed in area of LA/ San Diego, southern California

We, Sascha (Africa Twin) and my wife Kerstin (Transalp), are on a journey from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. Currently we are in Cambria, Coastal Road No 1 about 250 miles north of LA and unfortunately facing some problems with our bikes. the bikes are still riding but it would be better to fix everything b4 we heading for Baja....

We would need to find a place (probably we are leaving Cambria on Wednesday, 25th July and heading South) where we can order some spare parts to and stay 2-3 days to work on the bikes. If anybody out there has a workshop and a place to pitch our tent it would be really fabulous!!! Mechanic knowledge is appreciated too always we are no real experts and thankful for any advice.

The Africa Twin is using too much oil; it looks it is leaking from the cylinder head cover – hopefully only the upper cylinder head gasket but it´s hard to tell. The Transalp is suddenly drinking water like a thirsty camel and we would need to have a closer look at that too. Probably it is just somewhere leaking but we could not find out where so far. We would have to have a look at the carburetors as well, something is there not right I think... Further we would need to replace one of the fuel tabs on it which broke in Canada and is limiting the range of distance dramatic. All in all we hope we can fix it some kind quick… (I can order the parts I need from Germany, actually a friend of mine has them at his home but we would need an address to ship it to)

So any place where we can ship to the required spare parts and work on the bikes would help us enormously! For more details about us please feel free to visit our BLOG: RTWbyBIKE

This are both old bikes; the AT is from 1993 and the TA is from 1998. So no computer knowledge required...

Would be so great if anyone has an idea or tips where to get some help. Dont want to do Baja like this...

you can contact us: here via PM, seibelt AT gmx.de, or via Whatsapp, SMS, Tapatalk etc: 0049 171 429 99 6 nine

I posted this on another (well known) forum too, but all I got till now was an commercial offer for quite a high price from some dealership, nice that they want to help but we are kind of limited in our budget though)

Cheers Kerstin and Sascha

All settled? Good! If it doesn't work out I may have a contact for you in San Diego, CA.

This guy has helped several RTW riders before, has space and knowledge.
Let me know and I can forward you some links to find him.

Funny you wait to come to America to solve your "old bike" problems.
Why not rebuild your bikes BEFORE your trip while you are still at home in Germany?

You will be lucky on the AT if it just needs a new valve cover or head gasket. Hopefully nothing more serious.

On the TransAlp, I would have a look at your OIL ... NOW. Is it contaminated with water? If so, it will look light brown or green ... STOP!

Do not ride further until you replace your head Gasket, flush out both engine and cooling system. Get water out of engine case and get OIL out of cooling system, radiator, hoses, water pump.

When water is vanishing ... it usually points to failed Head Gasket and your radiator water is going into Engine.
When water gets into your engine oil ... not good! Could ruin whole engine!

Good luck, be safe!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
