Can't renew I94 visas by crossing borders

Always been rumours about being able to extend some travels in the US by crossing into another country.

"You cannot renew your I-94 entry by travelling to Canada, Mexico or adjacent islands in North America. If you enter the United States under the VWP, travel to another country in North America, then try to re-enter the United States, you will not be issued a new I-94 entry. Your second entry into the United States will be linked to your first I-94 entry and you must still depart the United States by the expiry date of the first I-94 entry. "

That's the same on a B1 visa as well. We were told at the consulate that our visa would pause when entering Mexico or Canada and we planned our 9 month trip based on info from the the U.S. consulate we found out before we left and we are now doing 6 months in the USA and may be able to spend 3 months in Canada but then I will not be able to ride down to Mexico.

Tony, we have a 5 year US Tourist Visa. This can only be used in 6 month blocks, we have had conflicting opinions on how long you have to exit the Country to reset it for another 6 months.
So far we entered Canada then Alaska and it were issued with a new paper 6 month Visa. We then went home and on return we were issued with another 6 month Visa.
We haven't tried the short term border hop to reset but this seems to be common. Do you enter Canada or Mexico for a few hours, a few days or a week. No one knows, but one thing is for sure don't upset the Border protection and get flagged
Safe travels and see you on the road

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
