Tunisia
Regarding Tunisia, you can drive more or less direct from the oasis at Ksar Ghilane to Camp Mars.
However, I don't think it's a good idea in August/September as the sand will be extremely soft and the dunes on the direct route are tricky at the best of times.
Also, there's been a lot less traffic out there since the Arab Spring and you'll be trailblazing most of the way. Not a good idea in the summer.
IMHO, I'd follow the piste from Ksar Ghilane towards Douz, past the old fort on the right and continue on the piste until the cafe on the right. Take a 90 degree turn here and follow the perimeter of the National Park keeping the fence on the left. Follow the fence SW then SW then E and then you can break SSE towards the mountain Tembain. There is a section of dunes to be crossed here but keep heading directly for the mountain and you should be OK. There's a well and a small nomad encampment behind Tembain and this is the route they use. Camp Mars is just on the SE side.
Looking forward to the trip report!
Happy trails,
Peter
