Halayeb Border Crossing (Egypt/Sudan East Coast)

Hi all,

Does anyone have any up to date info on the Eastern coast Egypt/Sudan border crossing (near the town on Halayeb)?

We are four Brits on a London to Cape Town journey in a 2001 Land Rover.

Can tourists use the border? Do we need special permission from both countries beforehand?

Have been searching around a fair bit but was hoping someone had the latest info sitting within the confines of their skull and was willing to share...!?

Thanks in advance

St John

To my knowledge that crossing was only ever open to Egypians/Sudanese, tourists cannot use it. The only option is Wadi Halfa.

However, like all rules in that fine land, may be be subject to change at short notice, and may possibly be bent with lot's of time, money and perseverance.

ah what a shame. We will be going to the Sudanese Embassy in Cairo so will ask there, hopefully we will be allowed to. Will post on here the outcome, if not Wadi Halfa it is.

Thanks for your response.

ask there, because (As I know) that one and the west road through Argeen are open. No more ferry to Wadi Haifa

The problem is not with the Sudanese side but the Egyptian, that is where they will not let you out/in. AFAIK the only option is Argeen/WH.

Entered to Sudan last week through that border. No problems at all. I used fixers in the two sides and total time was 5 hours
