No real issues and lots of people still doing the west africa routes.

The FCO advice only applies to a thin strip around polisario territory but the border crossing at Guergarrat has a lot of security and safe.

For insurance in places with travel advisories have a look at Battleface. That who I insure with. Global cover except the USA including Red Zones.

How is an evisa complicated? Its the best possible solution. You don't have to deal with border nonsense wondering whether or not some corrupt border guard will decide to shake you down for special fees, because you'll already have the visa.

with the mauritania eVisa you still have to do all the complex hurdles at the border and they can be a little chaotic issuing it.

In principle it should make things easier but just seems to have added an extra complication.

Yes, it's definitely still being used — I’ve seen reports from spring 2025 of guided caravans and lone riders using that route . Just stick to the main highway, do your e‑visa and customs paperwork at official crossings (Guergarat–Nouakchott), and avoid the mine-suspected buffer zone — it’s legal but risky

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
