As far as the world map goes, its either or, not both.
For Mongolia there is about the same detail on Bobs map as the Garmin.
Russia has lots more... in certain areas. Turky has lots more detail, so do the Stans.
Doing a quick selection in Mapsource for just about all of Russia/Stans/Mongolia/Northern China/Turkey comes to 495 maps or map tiles with a size of 152 megs. With the time to select maps round a route or just be more selective, I'm sure you could get it to less than half that.
I'm going to use Bobs map on my trip starting next week -  - Part of the idea being that you keep all your traks/logs/waypoints and send them to Bob... then the map gains in detail and accuracy.
Don't forget the paper maps as well though
