make any map waterproof

I know maps aren't considered too cool these days but I have found a brilliant way to avoid your map becoming a crumpled ball through overuse and then going all soggy when it rains.

You can photocopy it onto waterproof inkjet paper, I use it for surveying work and it can get proper soaked and still hold its own. Its thick enough to print on both sides too. I got most of Marocco on 8 sides (4 sheets). I can then keep the original map safely stashed for emergencies/planning whilst I use the smaller, easier to use and fold sheets in my tank bag.

It's quite expensive stuff, I got 50 sheets for about £20 a few years back, but it saves buying a new map and is so much easier to work with.

I use waterproof inkjet paper to print map excerpts when trying out new trail-riding routes in the uk. I used to buy the Memory Map branded stuff but have found a cheaper source on theifBay.

Well thanks guys, I had no idea waterproof paper even existed! I can see that coming in handy for certain documents...

For my paper maps like a large folding Michelin I use a thin i.e. 3 mil self-adhesive laminate on top (just one side). Works great to ensure durability over long travels.

It's some sort of plastic with a coating that "traps" the ink. The only thing to note is that you need to use a low ink density, i.e. set printer to draft.

It's quite tear resistant so can be hole punched and cable-tied to a Renthal cross bar. Pencils write on it quite well even in the rain.

There are waterproof maps printed on Duponts Tyvek which the kayaking fraternity use. Although it's paper like I've also heard stories of it being suitable in it's soft variety for making your own footprint for your tent.
