Smile Rabat, Morocco - purchasing a bike

Howdy!

I just moved to Morocco a couple of days ago and was looking to purchase a bike so I could get around to other cities with total agency. I am a novice cyclist so I am looking for something around 250cc. However, I am a bit wary about the culture given the only rule driving is that there are almost no rules. If anyone would like to PM and give me some insight into how I can navigate through this new country and get a bike I can cherish for a while and any other tips, I would really appreciate it!

Cheers,
Christiana

As you are already in Morocco, have you contacted a motorcycle dealer yet? He should be able to tell you how to proceed.

It's very much a case of 'expect the unexpected'. Ride close to the crown of the road where possible so there's more space for pedestrians and animals. The evening traffic is always worse, so practice when it's quieter. When travelling between towns choose the R regional and P provincial roads rather than the busy N national roads.

A good bike is the XR250 Honda Tornado that the tourist police ride, as shown at loc2roues location motos scooters marrakech maroc

I noticed a pretty well populated motorcycle store on Hassan II, toward Ocean, the other day.

I would try avito.ma (check out the "mini shooper - 2011" - only MAD1450!). They have hundreds of bikes for sale in Rabat - I didn't take long enough to see if there's anything there but cheap mopeds and scooters, mind you.

As to rules of the road, indeed there are rules. One of them, unfortunately, is that two-wheeled vehicles have no right of way and are effectively invisible. You will be cut off and doored with abandon, and people will pull out of streets right under your nose. So watch out.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
