I don't see how the Moroccan customs would keep track of the different requirements for each home country. They also don't care about insurance.

Their focus when you are passing through, is to ensure you have correctly completed the temporary importation forms, and aren't trying to buck the system.

MOT's not required. Just V5 registration document and the D16ter you can complete online. And your passport of course.

As Tim says, you don't need insurance to get through the border. You shouldn't drive without it though. If you can get cover from your insurer, great. If not you can buy it after customs at the border.

Happy trails,

Peter

Customs wouldn't stamp your forms unless you have 3rd party for morocco... Either get your company to send you a green insurance card with Morocco not crossed out or you have to get insurance at the border before they'll send you on your way... (Tanger Ville about one year ago)

Vehicle insurance isn't checked at TangerMed. The insurance office (bureau d'Assurance) is in a portakabin next to the banks once you clear the customs area.
TangerMed is much easier than Tanger Ville and there are more ferries. If the weather is rough, it's the Tarifa-TangerMed ferry that gets cancelled first.

Happy trails,

Peter

I can confirm that for Tangier Med Insurance is not and cannot be checked by customs/police/immigration because the insurance bureau is after the formalities.

But... were were asked to produce it at a police checkpoint. Only one checkpoint asked out of about a dozen or so that we passed.

I was pointing out that insurance is not checked at TangerMed. You can exit the port and then travel without insurance - but you shouldn't.

The insurance is third party only so you'll get no payout if you, or someone else, trashes your vehicle. However, it may get you out of trouble if you're involved in an accident.

Happy trails,

Peter

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
